When people picture a mountain town, they often imagine sleepy streets and just a handful of dining choices. But Boquete, Panama, breaks every stereotype.
Here, in a community of just 25,000 residents, you’ll find over 120 restaurants—from cozy fondas serving hearty $3 meals to elegant fine-dining spots where you can celebrate life’s milestones in style.

Let Them Eat Cake—Or Whatever They’d Like—in Boquete, Panama
Boquete may be a pretty little town nestled in Panama’s lush mountains, but with 123 dining establishments, it’s fair to say that when it comes to dining out, the world is your oyster… or your steak, pizza, or pancake.
From tiny family-run fondas and fast-food spots to cozy cafés, bakeries, and fine-dining restaurants, the culinary scene here is vibrant and surprisingly diverse.
When I first came to Boquete in 2011, dining out was already enjoyable—but since then, the food scene has truly exploded. Both Panamanians and expats have embraced the restaurant industry, and most establishments thrive. My theory? Many of Boquete’s expats are retirees who’ve spent decades cooking for their families. Now, they’re ready to set aside the meal planning, enjoy more leisure time, and savor the variety of restaurants Boquete has to offer.
Of course, listing all of Boquete’s eateries would be impossible, but here are some highlights across the spectrum:
Family Fondas
Scattered along the highways and throughout town, these “mom-and-pop” fondas serve hearty, simple fare—usually rice and beans, salad, and your choice of meat. Prices range from just $3 to $6, and meals often include a drink. The food is unpretentious but delicious.
Unique Dining
La Posada Boqueteña stands out not only for its reasonably priced, flavorful food (try the garlic shrimp) but also for its striking décor. Every wall is covered in vibrant murals, making dining here a visual experience as well.
Fast Food and Pizza
Boquete doesn’t have global chains, but it does boast plenty of fast food. No fewer than seven pizza places operate here—some delivery-only, others full-service restaurants. Favorites include Il Pianista and La Galeria. Burgers and chicken takeout are also widely available.
International Flavors
Craving variety? Boquete has you covered with Mexican, Italian, Chinese, Peruvian, and Japanese fare. Local favorites include Chopsticks, Otto Gastronomía Italiana, and La Casona Mexicana.
Breakfast Spots
Creperies, waffle houses, and breakfast cafés abound. A favorite is Café Punto de Encuentro—affectionately known as Olga’s—where a warm welcome and hearty breakfast set the tone for the day.
Cafés and Bakeries
Several eateries double as bakeries, filling the air with the aroma of fresh bread and pastries. Sugar and Spice and Mort’s are just two examples where baked goods shine.
Casual Family Restaurants
Boquete is full of quirky, cozy spots perfect for a casual meal. Popular choices include The Fish House, Casa Vieja, and Mike’s Global Grill.
Fine Dining
When it’s time to celebrate, Boquete’s high-end restaurants deliver top-tier service and cuisine. Christopher’s, Seasons at Lucero, T’ach at Panamonte, Sabor, and The River all provide memorable dining experiences.
Dining at Home
For those evenings when you’d rather stay in, Freeze and Feast offers pre-cooked frozen meals—main courses, sides, and desserts—that are both nourishing and delicious. Meals can be picked up in-store or pre-ordered.
Boquete offers something for every appetite, from simple local fare to refined international cuisine—all at prices lower than those in Canada or the U.S. With such variety, no palate goes unsatisfied.
And if you’ve ever dreamed of opening your own restaurant, Boquete may be the place. Low taxes, affordable supplies, and fresh local ingredients make it an appealing destination for culinary entrepreneurs. Despite the many options, restaurants here continue to thrive, thanks to support from both locals and the steady stream of visitors.
Whether you live to eat or simply eat to live, Boquete ensures you’ll dine well.
